Florida State athletics gets $1 million from anonymous donor

An anonymous donor pledged $1 million to the Florida State athletics “Unconquered Campaign” on Thursday, matching the $1 million donation first-year FSU football coach Willie Taggart and his wife, Taneshia, made in September.

After the Taggart family personally invested in the campaign, the donor felt compelled to do the same, according to FSU.

“Anyone who has the conviction and character to lead by example like that — especially so early on in their tenure — deserves a high level of support,” the anonymous donor said in an FSU news release.

“When I initially heard about their commitment, I was so taken aback. I then began thinking of how I could respond and back them. I am proud of Coach Taggart and it is an honor to support him and his program. I believe this football operations facility will play a prominent role in advancing FSU football.”

School officials stated the donor is an FSU fan who has asked to remain anonymous.

The Unconquered Campaign, which was unveiled in September, is a joint initiative of Florida State University, the FSU athletics department and Seminole Boosters, Inc.

Seminoles Boosters Inc., the private fundraising group that supports the FSU athletics department, has led the push to raise money for a variety of athletics projects.

The five-year campaign aims to raise $100 million for construction of a football-only complex, athlete scholarship endowments, assistance for women’s athletics and renovation of the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course, the Coyle E. Moore Athletic Center, Dick Howser Stadium and Donald L. Tucker Center.

The campaign is slated to run through June 30, 2020.

Taggart joins a growing group of head coaches who have donated a significant portion of their salary to help upgrade their school’s football facilities. So far, Mark Richt of Miami, Bronco Mendenhall of Virginia and Gus Malzahn of Auburn have also made donations.
