FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell named new UMass head coach

Florida State offensive coordinator Walt Bell was named the new UMass head coach Monday one season after taking over leading the Seminoles’ offense.

He will be introduced during a press conference Wednesday at 2 p.m.

“I am immensely excited for the opportunity to serve as the University of Massachusetts football head coach, and for my wife, Maria, and I to join the UMass family,” Bell said in a statement released by the school. “… I look forward to getting right to work with the young men on our team.”

Bell served just one year as FSU’s offensive coordinator and was given play calling duties late in the season. The Seminoles first season running Taggart’s Gulf Coast offense garnered mixed results, with Florida State going 5-7 overall and 3-5 in ACC play.

Bell was also the FSU quarterbacks coach, working closely with starter Deondre Francois and backup James Blackman throughout the past year.
