Gillespie’s Double-Double Sparks FSU Victory
After coming off a long 2017-2018 season awaiting eligibility, redshirt junior forward Kiah Gillespie took command in her second appearance as a Seminole on Friday night and led Florida State Women’s Basketball to a 74-53 win over UNF.
Gillespie scored 17 points with a career-high 12 rebounds as Florida State (2-0) used an early second-half run to pull away from the Ospreys (0-1).
A transfer from Maryland, Gillespie recorded her second double-double in the second game of the season. She grabbed nine rebounds and had 11 of her 17 in the second half. She went 7-of-13 from the floor and added four assists in the win.
FSU led by eight at the end of the first half, but the game took a turning point when the Seminoles broke open the third quarter, turning a 41-33 lead into a 51-33 advantage on a 10-0 run.
Junior guard Nicki Ekhomu went 6-of-11 from the floor and added 15 points. Primarily handling the ball as a point guard, she added six assists with just one turnover. Her six assists were a career high, reaching five six previous times.
Three of Florida State’s true freshmen in Valencia Myers, Amaya Brown, and Kourtney Weber contributed greatly tonight, combining to score 29 of 74 points for the Seminoles.
Myers added ten points with two blocks. Brown scored a career-high 10 points, with five rebounds and one assist.
Weber picked up nine points, all by three 3-point field goals. She recorded four rebounds with two assists.

The Seminoles held UNF to zero second-chance points while totaling 13 of their own.
FSU’s defense propelled the Ospreys into several miscues and they produced just nine assists to 13 turnovers, compared to Florida State’s 19 assists to 14 turnovers.
After their win over UNF, Florida State will continue its five-game homestand with The Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. against the Gators.
