A key win in FSU’s brutal early ACC schedule

  1. Back when every basketball thread devolved into a discussion about the most efficient way to fire Coach Hamilton, Jim Larranaga at Miami (of FL) was a popular name to show how our rivals were in much greener pastures. Well, it’s amazing how the FBI can change perspectives. The Hurricanes are now 0-3 in the ACC, have lost four of their last five vs FSU, have the nation’s 46th ranked recruiting class, and have federal agents watching their every move. Kenpom.com currently projects their record to be 14-16 (6-12). Freshman Devin Vassell was four years old the last time Florida State was that bad.
  2. Christ Koumadje played in his 100th game for the Seminoles. He had two assists, which tied his career record (he’d done it once before). Both assists led to dunks, and for the season he now has assisted on more dunks than than everyone but Trent Forrest, MJ Walker, David Nichols, and Anthony Polite. His hook shot has abandoned him, however, and he was 0-6 from the field. His last made non-dunk was vs LSU. He did grab three offensive boards, and is now 5th nationally in ORB%.
  3. The three players FSU cannot afford to have injured are Phil Cofer, Terance Mann, and Trent Forrest, so naturally all three have been injured. Terance Mann finally returned to practice the day before the Miami game, and now Trent Forrest is hobbled with turf toe. He did still manage to power through 27 minutes, though he was unable to be an effective scorer. He also missed the front end of two 1-and-1s. For the first time this year he’s gone three straight games without scoring in double figures.
  4. After nine steals in 63 possessions vs Virginia, FSU picked up seven in 68 possessions vs Miami. The ‘Noles are now 2nd in ACC games in steal%. The first ranked team is Duke. Saturday should be fun.
  5. FSU won 68-62 in a 68 possession game. In their last 30 ACC games FSU has gone to the line less just once. Miami, which is not a good team at getting to the line, made five more FTs than the Seminoles attempted. FSU also only made 23% of their 3-point attempts. Those two things kept this from turning into a blowout. Miami’s 0.91 points scored per possession was their 2nd worst effort of the year.
