RALEIGH, N.C. (WCTV) — The 2018 campaign treads on for the Florida State Seminoles who are looking to avoid dipping under .500 for the first time since they were 1-2 to start the season.
FSU heads to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the NC State Wolfpack, who sit a #21 in the first College Football Playoff rankings.
The Noles will be without Nyquan Murray and Zaquandry White for the first half today, as well.
Will the Seminoles be able to keep Wolfpack quarterback Ryan Finley, who is the most accurate QB in the conference, at bay? Who will even be the signal caller for the Noles today?
3rd Quarter, 4:32 – FSU 14 – NC State 37
I’m far, far from a “blame the refs,” guy, especially in a professional setting like this, but that last scoring drive was thanks to some officiating.
Back-to-back pass interference calls, which were questionable at best, were called against Asante Samuel and Stanford Samuels leading to a two-yard touchdown pass from Finley to Meyers.
3rd Quarter, 8:49 – FSU 14 – NC State 30
The turnover on downs doesn’t necessarily kill FSU, as the defense hold strong and forces the Pack into a field goal.
How will the FSU offense respond?
3rd Quarter, 13:07 – FSU 14 – NC State 27
FSU thought they had a first down after Ontaria Wilson had to dive and come back in to catch a ball from Blackman but the officials, after replay, say he was short, so the Noles line up in shotgun on 4th and short and get stuffed.
First drive of the second half is a turnover on downs, and NC State has the ball already in field goal range.
HALFTIME: FSU 14 – NC STATE 27
2nd Quarter, 0:26 – FSU 14 – NC State 27
Exactly what the doctor ordered for FSU before the half, with an eight-play, 75-yard scoring drive in only 48 seconds.
it’s capped off with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Blackman to Akers for Blackman’s second scoring pass of the day and Akers first score on the afternoon.
FSU is getting it done in big ways through the air, with the Noles averaging 13.6 yards per reception this half.
2nd Quarter, 1:14 – FSU 7 – NC State 27
Entering today, Ricky Person had no career touchdowns. He has two today.
This one already feels like it’s about a 40 point game.
2nd Quarter, 5:01 – FSU 7 – NC State 20
What is that, three times now that NC State has stalled inside the redzone? This one is because of plays not going their way, not due to FSU’s defense.
2nd Quarter, 9:36 – FSU 7 – NC State 17
FSU is on the board thanks to the James Blackman/Tamorrion Terry connection.
On third down, Blackman finds Terry on a streak down the field for 40 yards and on the next play, they hook up for a 35-yard touchdown.
A great offensive response and we’ll see if this starts something. Anything.
2nd Quarter, 11:13 – FSU 0 – NC State 17
It takes 2:34 for the Pack to go 59 yards in six plays, with the kicker being a 31-yard screen pass to Jakobi Meyers, and Finley has his first touchdown of the day after finding Kelvin Harmon in the endzone for an eight-yard touchdown pass.
How will the Seminoles respond before this one gets ugly?
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER: FSU 0 – NC STATE 10
1st Quarter, 0:10 – FSU 0 – NC State 10
The Noles bend but don’t break, allowing a couple of big plays to let the Wolfpack drive inside the Noles’ 10 yardline (thanks, in part, to a questionable penalty) but they don’t let NCST put another touchdown on the board.
Instead, NCST nails home a 21-yard field goal to make it a 10-0 game.
1st Quarter, 7:00 – FSU 0 – NC State 7
The defense bails out the offense and forces the Wolfpack to go three-and-out on the ensuing drive.
Thanks, in part, to a failed trick play that would have led to six, but the ball was thrown just out of the reach of the intended NC State receiver.
Noles start their next drive at their own nine yardline.
1st Quarter, 7:55 – FSU 0 – NC State 7
FSU was putting together a strong drive, especially with abhorant field position – starting from their own 5 yardline – and they were driving to midfield but on 3rd and 2, out of a Wolfpack timeout, Jacques Patrick fumbles the ball after being hit at the line and the Wolfpack recover easily.
1st Quarter, 10:35 – FSU 0 – NC State 7
NC State won the coin toss, elected to receive and marched 75 yards in 11 plays to put the game’s opening score on the board.
Honestly, not much to say there other than “that was incredibly easy.”
With all the talk surrounding Ryan Finley in the game, he only accounted for 32 yards on the play. Reggie Gallaspy, Jr. did a lot of damage, taking three carries for 34 yards.
It was Ricky Person who punched it in for the Pack.
Time for Blackman.
Hello all! It’s a somber Saturday in Tallahassee but we still have football to play.
The Noles have a tough task ahead with Ryan Finley but if there’s one matchup the Noles feel good about, it should be the FSU front four and putting pressure on him.
The ABC broadcast opened talking about FSU’s offensive woes. NC State is fairly average defensively, so maybe today can be a get-right game for FSU.
Oh, and according to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, James Blackman will be starting today.
Let us football.
