Series History: Florida State leads the series 4-3, but UConn won the last meeting – which came on a neutral court in 2011 at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.
Hamilton’s History with UConn: While Leonard Hamilton has faced the Huskies just once as FSU’s head coach, he has plenty of history with the program. During Hamilton’s time at Miami (1991-2000), he regularly faced them as a Big East opponent. Hamilton, along with long-time assistant Stan Jones, led Miami to winning records in each of their final six seasons at Miami – making the Hurricanes one of only three teams in the league (also UConn and Syracuse) to have winning conference records from 1995-2000. The Hurricanes 48-22 record in the Big East in his last four seasons in the league tied UConn for the best cumulative league record in that span. Miami, Hamilton and Jones were 28-6 against Big East opponents in their final two seasons in the league (.824 winning percentage). Hamilton went 5-10 against the Huskies while at Miami.
FSU’s recent history on neutral courts: With its two neutral site wins this season (vs. UAB and LSU in the AdvoCare Invitational) the Seminoles have eight neutral site wins and an 8-3 record .727 winning percentage) on neutral courts in the last two seasons. Florida State earned three neutral site wins in the 2018 NCAA Tournament (Bridgestone Arena in Nashville and Staples Center in Los Angeles) as it advanced to the Elite Eight.
Mann going for 1K still: Senior Terance Mann, who is averaging in double figure scoring for the second consecutive season, enters Saturday’s game against UConn with 989 career points scored. He is averaging 11.1 points as a senior after averaging a career-high 12.6 point per game as a junior. Mann is averaging 12.3 points in the last two seasons and 42 games.
Forcing turnovers: Florida State has forced at least 15 turnovers in seven of its first eight games of the season. The Seminoles forced a season-high 22 turnovers in its victory of Troy and 20 in its win over Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. 17.5 Florida State is forcing an average of 17.5 turnovers per game and has forced a total of 42 turnovers (22 by Troy and 20 by Purdue) in the last two games – an average of 21.0 turnovers forced in its wins over the Boilermakers and the Trojans.
FSU .316: Florida State has limited its first eight opponents to a .316 mark from the 3-point line and to 6.8 3-point field goals made per game. The Seminoles’ opponents shot .355 from the 3-point line and averaged 8.1 made 3-point shots per game during the 2017-18 season.
Up next: Following Florida State’s game against UConn, the Seminoles will not play again until December 17 when they face Southeast Missouri State in Tallahassee after their final academic exam period.
