TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — The Christmas wish list for Willie Taggart and the Florida State Seminoles seems to get longer by the day. What started with an offensive coordinator vacancy snowballed into missing on top targets on the first day of the early signing period.
Over the past 24 hours, the Noles have lost out on top quarterback prospect Sam Howell, who signed with North Carolina, and top offensive line prospect Will Putnam, who signed with the Clemson Tigers.
While FSU was still able to sign three guys up front, it isn’t enough. Especially for a front five that allowed 29 sacks last season.
With more work to be done on the recruiting trail, Willie Taggart says finding guys to protect the quarterback will continue to be an emphasis into National Signing Day in February.
“I think we all understand how important the offensive line is for us. We all understand that and that’s always going to be a priority for us, not just this class but every class we have moving forward,” Taggart said. “Not just only offensive line but big time offensive linemen to help us win ball games.”
Among the early signees for FSU on the offensive line were four-star Dontae Lucas and three-stars Maurice Smith and Jay Williams.
247Sports lists FSU’s early signing class number 14 in the nation and the second best in the ACC.
