Tennessee offensive coordinator: Vols have competition for Hugh Freeze

We entered the day with Hugh Freeze and Chip Lindsey as the leaders in the clubhouse for Tennessee’s vacant offensive coordinator job. We’re ending the day feeling an entirely different way.

Chip Lindsey has reportedly accepted the offensive coordinator position at Kansas on Les Miles’ staff. Now Hugh Freeze seems to have options other than Tennessee, as expected.

Football Scoop reports that Willie Taggart spent time with Freeze today, likely discussing Florida State’s newly vacated offensive coordinator position.

It was announced this afternoon that Walt Bell would be taking the UMass job, opening Florida State as a possibility for Freeze. With Lindsey now headed to Kansas, Auburn could get in on Freeze as well.

Another wrinkle in this is Liberty, who saw their head coaching position come open today after Turner Gill retired today. According to Football Scoop, they’re interested in Freeze as well and plan to interview him for their opening.

Tennessee had every opportunity to lock Freeze up over the weekend, but that didn’t happen. According to John Brice, Freeze wants the job and it’s in Tennessee’s hands.

Without a final answer from Tennessee, Freeze’s name is now popping up all over the place. Could this just be Jimmy Sexton doing what Jimmy Sexton does? Maybe. But as Austin Price said on the Midday 180 today, the longer this thing goes, the worse it feels for Tennessee.
