UK Basketball: Kentucky projected as 5-seed in ESPN bracketology

It is November, but apparently it is never too early to start thinking about March. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi released his latest, yet way too early projection of the NCAA Tournament bracket on Thursday. The Kentucky Wildcats are listed as a 5-seed in the Midwest Region, opening up tournament play against the Davidson Wildcats.

Of course, you always want top seed. And the most predictable thing about the most unpredictable postseason in sports is how much Kentucky fans will complain about the Wildcats’ path. However, this route to the Final Four does not look half bad.

Yes, facing the Kansas Jayhawks in the Sweet 16 would be less than ideal. But they certainly do not look unbeatable. Then if you draw the Nevada Wolf Pack, the Florida State Seminoles, and the Virginia Tech Hokies as the next three seeds, I think John Calipari and his staff would sign up for that today.

Kentucky sits at 6-1 on the season with an atrocious loss to the Duke Blue Devils and have never really looked the part of the team we saw in the Bahamas this summer. That team looked like a No. 1 seed that would strut into the Elite Eight. The group that has been on the Rupp Arena floor in November looks more likely to limp into the second round.

The Wildcats have a ton of upside and could absolutely be a top 2 seed come March. The talent is there on both sides of the court and in every facet of the game. But if they do not start inching toward their potential soon, they will be digging out of a hole to get a favorable draw for the big dance.
