Florida State head coach Willie Taggart, along with wide receivers coach David Kelly, made their way to Monroe (N.C.) to check on four-star quarterback pledge Sam Howell on Wednesday. The coaches met with Howell and his parents.
“We had a really good visit,” Sam’s father, Duke Howell, told Noles247.com. “Good to spend some time with Taggart and DK.”
A major topic of conversation for the Howells with the coaching staff was the future of FSU’s offense, specifically with regards to the offensive coordinator position. The Howells had a long-standing relationship with outgoing FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell, who recently accepted the UMass head coaching job.
Now Taggart is tasked with replacing Bell. An offensive coordinator hire will also likely be the coach responsible for coaching the quarterbacks, thus having a major impact on Howell.
A specific name wasn’t shared by Duke Howell about who may fill the role vacated by Bell, but the discussion was thorough per him.
“Yeah, he talked to us about some guys. Can’t mention the names,” Duke Howell said. “But he’s looking for a guy who runs his style of offense with tempo.
“Coach hopes to have his guy in place soon,” the elder Howell added.
FSU, who has already hosted Sam Howell for an official visit, is trying to fend off North Carolina and Miami to retain his services. He has already officially visited North Carolina, but due to their head coaching change which saw the hiring of Mack Brown, and proximity, a return visit isn’t out of the question. Miami, with head coach Mark Richt and quarterbacks coach Jon Richt leading the charge, are also trying to get the younger Howell in for a visit.
“Sam is still committed to FSU,” his father added. “They expected other schools to recruit him. If that wasn’t the case, then they are after the wrong QB.
“Sam has a solid relationship with Coach Taggart,” he added. “Visit went good.”
A source indicated to Noles247.com earlier on Wednesday that the belief at this time is that Sam Howell sticks with his pledge to the Seminoles, but they also added that the family is paying very close attention to who is hired in the offensive coordinator role.
